We’ve been moving around to different parts of our beautiful country, Kenya, on a people-watching tour for quite a while. We decided to conclude our mission in a cafe along a very busy street in Nairobi a few weeks ago.
For a quick masterclass in global trade in the footwear field, take a look at Kenyans’ feet during the morning rush hour. All kinds of footwear are on display.
Sneakers from the States, boots from Turkey, and flats from China. Nothing Kenyan on sight in almost ninety per cent of the sampling.
Then I looked down at my own feet. Imported.
It hit us like a cold splash of water. We constantly complain about the economy, the strength of the Shilling, and the lack of jobs for our younger brothers and sisters.
Yet, there we were—and where the majority of us are—sending our hard-earned money abroad to pay the salaries of factory workers thousands of miles away.
That day, we decided to do a little digging into the Kenyan footwear industry.
What we found blew our minds, changed our shopping habits, and made us realise that true patriotism starts from the ground up.
